The red carpet and protocol; a culture of street level bureaucracy in Pakistan.

The red carpet and protocol; a culture of street level bureaucracy in Pakistan:

The ‘chief Saab’ is very real but the ‘saab’ is no more .

The Saab is a ‘mem’ (میم)now. Only that the narrative surrounding the ‘mem’ is such that it helps her navigate her autonomy in a very manipulative manner.

This ‘chief mem’ is the emergent reality of a very confused society.

Putting it simply. She can cry, she can boss and she can comply.

She can and will play the victim often!

All this for what?

Power!

Influence!

To get her own way!

This is not a piece of writing my fellow females will appreciate  very much but it addresses a phenomenon quite prevalent in Pakistan as a consequence of Globalisation.

The global woman earns for herself, lifts her own weight and does not expect any favours from the men in her family or environment but the Pakistani woman is different.

She aspires for the glamour, autonomy and fun her western counterpart enjoys but with all the expectations a Muslim woman ought to keep from her men.

She is not ready to give up her ‘muslim privilege’ !

Which in turn gives birth to men lacking in strength and integrity.

When I say steet level burecracy I refer to the cunning used by the ‘chief mems’!

They know how and when to extract benifits , when to drop a tear and when to lift a finger.

They know patience when they want the other to wait and they know efficiency when they need things be done!

They know how to lead people into doing things they cannot do and they know owner ship of what’s not rightly theirs!

So much goes on behind  the gentle  and soft facade of femininity!

Patriarchy then is not merely men seeking to control but also a culture of power where ‘chief mems’ employ methods to manipulate power with men as their puppets.

Women turn the tides with familial  and sectarian rifts still they get the red carpet treatment in Pakistan.

Power is addictive, power is fatal!!

A reminder to all in positions of power and responsibility:

" Lower your gaze from the world and turn your heart away from it."

Umar ibn Al-Khattab wrote to Abu Ubaydah on appointing him as commander.

ON RESPONSIBILITY!

The seemingly inconsequential fly buzzed around incessantly from one nose to another. Some were totally oblivious to its existence, Some bore its buzzing with a somewhat irritated expression while others shooed it away with a wave of their hand. Eventually,  it dived into a teacup. All hell broke loose. “Who let the fly in?”, “What a mess”, “Such a crappy building”, “Who left the window open?” “Who opened the window?”, “Why can’t you put a lid on your cup?”, “Why don’t we have fly screens for these doors and windows?”, “Why don’t we have a fly repellent?” A guy sitting on the far end folded his magazine and squatted the fly as soon as it landed on his desktop. That was ‘The End’ for the fly. (inspired from a real-life scene) We can roughly categorise the two kinds of behaviours/personalities described in the scenario above as ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’. Out of these two our people fall into the ‘reactive’ category. A nation of reactive individuals who are not willing to...

The truth unveiled!

VALENTINE’S DAY The truth unveiled 'Every deen has an innate character. The character of Islam is modesty.' Al Muwatta 47.9 HOW IT STARTED: Like most Christian festivals, the origin of Valentine’s Day also lies in the pagan Rome. In ancient Rome young men and women used to celebrate this festival where the women would write love letters and throw them in a huge pot. Then the men would choose their partners through lottery and would court (relationship before marriage) the girl whose letter came in their hands. (Webster’s family encyclopedia). According to the encyclopedia this festival has no direct or indirect link to the life of Saint Valentine (269 A.D). To make Christianity more popular and acceptable among the pagan masses, the Christian clergy added this festival to Christianity by celebrating this day as Saint Valentine’s Day. The myths regarding Saint Valentine giving his life for the sake of love and others are all false. WHERE DO WE ST...
