The red carpet and protocol; a culture of street level bureaucracy in Pakistan: The ‘chief Saab’ is very real but the ‘saab’ is no more . The Saab is a ‘mem’ (میم)now. Only that the narrative surrounding the ‘mem’ is such that it helps her navigate her autonomy in a very manipulative manner. This ‘chief mem’ is the emergent reality of a very confused society. Putting it simply. She can cry, she can boss and she can comply. She can and will play the victim often! All this for what? Power! Influence! To get her own way! This is not a piece of writing my fellow females will appreciate very much but it addresses a phenomenon quite prevalent in Pakistan as a consequence of Globalisation. The global woman earns for herself, lifts her own weight and does not expect any favours from the men in her family or environment but the Pakistani woman is different.
