In a discussion with an old friend lamenting at the media depictions of reality and how they further tend to shape our reality and vice versa. We started discussing popular entertainment media. She was of the view that movies depict a nation’s mindset.
The height of achievement shown in our movies is usually to overcome all possible hurdles in order to win over a girl and achieve a lasting relationship in the face of “zaalim Zamana”! That’s why this is the ultimate goal of our nation nowadays be they young or old, religious or otherwise.
While their western counterparts devoid of the “zaalim Zamaana” with easy access to women tend to focus on finding ways to ‘live more’ or ‘live better’. Sometimes in search of extra sensory powers. Sometimes in search of new places to live. In short to achieve permanence in a temporary world. That’s why they are focused on creating medicines , technology and arms to try it out all in wars inflicted upon other countries. The whole world is a testing lab for them now.
Oversimplification ?
Probably !
Reality ?
Worse!

اقبال کے زمانے میں مشینوں کی حکومت کا یہ عالم نا تھا جو ہمارے زمانے میں ہے۔ مرحوم نے نا جانے کیا کچھ جانچ لیا تھا اُس وقت جو ہمیں ابھی تک سمجھ نہیں آئی۔ اب تو مشینوں کی حکومت کا یہ عالم ہے کہ کل ہی ہمارے آئی فون نے اطلاع دی کہ "آپ کو پتا ہے کہ اگر آپ سڑیس میں ہیں تو قرآن مجید آپ کے سٹریس کو کم کرتا ہے"۔ ہم نے بھی اشرف المخلوق ہونے کا حق ادا کرتے ہوئے آئی فون کو جوابی اطلاع دی "جی مجھے علم ہے اس فائدے کا اور میں رابطے میں ہوں اپنے رب سے"۔  اس تمام اطلاعاتی مراسلت کا نتیجہ یہ نکلا کہ ہمیں اپنے فون سے شدید انس اور لگاوؐ محسوس ہوا۔ کسی زمانے میں انسان انسان کا خیر خواہ ہوتا تھا۔ جب سے  انسان نے حکومت اور کاروبار کی خاطر انسانوں کی خریدوفروخت شروع کی تب سے خیر خواہی کے لیے کچھ مشینوں کو آٹو میٹک پر کردیا گیا۔ خریدوفروخت کرنے والوں کو خاص قسم کے انسان چاہیے تھے اور انسانوں کو سہارا۔ یہ ڈوبتے کو تنکے کا سہارا نہیں ہے۔ یہاں پر تو مشین ڈوبتے کو سیدھا ٓاسمان پر ایک ہی چھلانگ میں لے جاتی ہے اور اس تمام سفر میں جو ایک نقطے سے دوسرے تک ڈسپلیسمنٹ ہوتی ہے اُس میں انسان کی ...

Hermeneutics and symbolism

Quran does not limit human experience with metaphor. It uses metaphor to expand his/her intellectual horizon but it uses real stories to limit the interpretation. Similarly the symbolism in Quran is not a mere metaphor. Every symbol has a reality but we are told by Allah ji to not try interpreting them in this world. The wisdom behind this is undoubtedly profound. Human reality cannot be based on allusions to something which no human has ever experienced thus it has to be based on something which is experienceable . Practicable and implementable. Such is the reality of prophetic examples in all three monotheistic religions.  It would be relevant to note here that lived experience is of vital importance but the lived experience of one individual cannot be generalised unless the creator and steerer of  all lived experiences chose that individual.
